Treholt’s family confirms this Aftenposten.

Treholt lived to be 80 years old. He was born on 13 December 1942 at Brandbu.

He was a civil servant and politician for the Labor Party. In the 1980s, Treholt worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in 1984 he was arrested at Fornebu airport, on his way to Vienna.

In 1985, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for espionage for the benefit of the Soviet Union and Iraq. Treholt has for all these years claimed to be innocent of espionage. He tried to have his case reopened several times, without success.

In 1992, Treholt was released and pardoned for health reasons. Since then, Treholt lived as a businessman in Cyprus and in Moscow, where he lived for the last few years. It was also in the Russian capital that Treholt passed away, after a short illness.

Treholt is survived by a son and two grandchildren.
