The mask requirement in public transport has been lifted – the same applies to long-distance transport. Read here what now applies in the individual countries.

The Corona mask requirement in the Public transport services was abolished in the remaining federal states on Thursday (February 2nd). Passengers on ICEs and other long-distance trains can again travel without mouth and nose protection. After almost three years of Corona, the obligation to wear it will no longer apply from this Thursday long-distance.

As early as January, five federal states announced that they would abolish the obligation in February. A little later, Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach (SPD) announced that the mask requirement would also end in long-distance transport from February. We show where and when the Corona rules changed.

Corona mask requirement: These countries are now abolishing them

Berlin, Saxony, Thuringia, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg announced at the beginning of January that they Mask requirement want to abolish in local public transport. Shortly thereafter, Baden-Württemberg followed suit. Finally, long-distance traffic and the states of Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hamburg and Bremen followed.

On three states the mask was no longer mandatory in local public transport: in Bavaria, Saxony-Anhalt and also in Schleswig-Holstein since New Year’s Day. This led to absurd situations, especially for commuters between Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. Because in the Hanseatic city, the mask requirement was valid until February.

Mask requirement: This applies to long-distance transport

In long-distance traffic, such as the ICE and IC of Deutsche Bahn, the mask requirement is also not applicable. Lauterbach had coordinated this with the federal states. The early end of the mask requirement in long-distance met with great approval from Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann. The FDP politician also advocated the rapid lifting of all other corona protection measures. The current Corona Protection Ordinance runs until April 7th. (lro/dpa)
