According to the information, a total of more than 48 exabytes flowed through the DE-CIX systems last year. A year earlier, 38 exabytes had been passed through the peering points. “More and more data is being transmitted throughout the Internet because modern, digital applications and services require more and more data from different sources,” Christoph Dietzel, head of production and research at DE-CIX, was quoted as saying.

Development peaked on December 14, when teams from France and Morocco met during the World Cup in Qatar. Here the traffic shot up to 132 terabytes per minute. Both in New York and in Frankfurt a. M., the DE-CIX recorded values here that had never been measured before.
Dietzel naturally assumes that the trend will continue – not only that more data is generally flowing over the Internet, but also that a similar growth rate will remain. Because fiber optic connections are now being expanded all over the world into households, which ultimately offers potential for data applications that were previously unthinkable with the previous connections via television cable or telephone landline network.
