He Commissioner Gilberto Fleitas, Commander of the National Policeexpressed his regret in an interview with Radio Monumental for the cases of active officers who get involved in criminal acts, since they damage the work and the relationship with the citizenry that has been carried out by the police institution.
In this sense, he referred to the recent event that occurred in Paraguarí, where the inspecting officer died Carmelo Alcides Benítez Reyes (36) and his colleague and accomplice Roberto Chaparro Martínez was arrested for his alleged participation in an assault in Mbuyapey.
According to the commander, the dejected uniformed man led an almost perfect institutional lifeconsidering that he even gave talks on good behavior to young people, since he had a double lifebeing a brand new uniform and at the same time the member of a criminal gang that committed their crimes in their spare time.
The commander assured that the case was taken very seriously and responsibly, and that Asunción and Central intervened directly to clarify what happened. “These acts of our members linked to crime completely lower once again that important work that we have been doing and logically affect the institutional image too much,” he said.
The commander also reported that last year almost 50 people were dismissed from the institution for misconduct, and this year more than 20 people have been left out for drug addiction and bad behavior. He recognized that there are situations of drug consumption internally, and that corruption is being fought.
He also highlighted that the selection process for future police officers has been improved, with the intervention of the National University and the National Computer Center to evaluate the applicants. “No college or university teaches to commit a crime,” he said.
Fleitas reiterated his commitment to continue working to improve the image and relationship of the National Police with the citizenry, and He asked for the support and backing of colleagues from Internal Affairs and investigators who have the difficult task of investigating their own co-worker.
