No one can deny that the Nintendo Switch has been a success. The small game console has sold over 125 million copies and has only sold fewer copies than the Playstation 2 and Nintendo DS. But now sales are starting to decline – something that can be attributed to both aging hardware and component shortages.

In a new one quarterly reportwhich provides a forecast until March 2024, however, it appears that Nintendo does not expect to release new hardware as early as 2023. This is contrary to previous (loose) rumors about a new Switch in time for this year’s Christmas shopping.

Instead, the Japanese video game giant seems to be pinning its hopes on the software side. On Friday, Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be released and later this summer we will get to know Pikmin 4. In addition, the company is expected to build on existing game efforts with new downloadable content to improve the numbers.

Bloomberg cites a statement to investors by Nintendo boss Shuntaro Furukawa, who admits it is doubtful it will even be able to sell 15 million Switch consoles this year.
