Eight children and security guard killed in school shooting

eight children and a security guard were killed in a shooting in a school in Serbiansay the authorities. The suspect is a student 14 year old seventh grader.

Police in central Belgrade received a call about the shooting at the Vladislav Ribnikar school at around 8:40 am (0640 GMT) on Wednesday, they said in a statement.

Police later said the suspect reported the attack to police and confessed to shooting.

Veselin Milic, Belgrade’s police chief, said the attacker had two weapons and two Molotov cocktails and had planned everything in advance.

At least one of the six injured students was in a life-threatening condition and was undergoing surgery, according to reports, while a teacher was also seriously injured.

Milan Nedeljkovic, mayor of the central Vracar district, where the school is located, said doctors were fighting to save the teacher’s life.

As news of the shooting spread, terrified parents came to the school to try to find their children.

Milan Milosevic, who said his daughter was in a history class when the shooting took place, told N1 television that he ran when he heard what had happened.

Local media footage of the scene showed commotion outside the school as police removed the suspect, whose head was covered as officers led him to a parked car on the street.

Mass shootings are relatively rare in Serbia, which has strict gun laws, but the Western Balkans are awash with hundreds of thousands of illegal weapons after the wars and riots of the 1990s.

In the latest mass shooting, a 2013 Balkan War veteran killed 13 people in a central Serbian village.

Serbian authorities have offered several amnesties for owners to turn in or register illegal weapons.
