The Head of State and Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne are paying for a pension reform that is widely contested in public opinion. Nevertheless, the French appear resigned after the promulgation of the text.

After the enactment of the pension reform, Emmanuel Macron’s popularity rating fell to its lowest level at 26%, with a quarter of French people declaring themselves resigned, according to a BVA poll for RTL published this Friday.

The Head of State has lost two points since the end of March “finding the level reached” at the very beginning of the yellow vests crisis in October 2018, specifies the poll carried out after his televised address on Monday.

A feeling of resignation on the rise

Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne loses a point, with 27% of respondents saying they have a good opinion of her action, her worst result since joining Matignon in May 2022.

After the validation of the pension reform a week ago by the constitutionnal Council and its immediate promulgation by Emmanuel Macron, anger still dominates for 45% of those questioned, but gives up three points.

On the other hand, the feeling of resignation jumped by eight points to reach 24%, the highest level ever reached. Another rebound, that of the French who want social mobilization to continue, an increase of three points to 63%.

Macron’s speech does not convince

Nearly three quarters of French people (74%) believe that the head of state “was wrong to promulgate the law quickly”, fearing that this decision “would stir up social anger”.

They are very largely skeptical about the objectives set by Emmanuel Macron during his televised address on Monday: 69% believe that it has not met their expectations, 73% do not believe them realistic and 74% do not believe them likely to relaunch the quinquennium.

Survey conducted on April 18 and 19 with a sample of 1002 people representative of the French population aged 18 and over, according to the quota method, with a margin of error of between 1.4 and 3.1 points.
