Vienna (Austria) is famous for the prestige of its imperial palaces, its baroque churches or its green spaces. The Austrian capital conceals another treasure, less known: its water. In the city’s fountains, in restaurants or at home, the two million inhabitants have crystal clear spring water. It comes from the Austrian Alps, 180 km from the capital. A totally preserved writing of industry, and agriculture.
Land sanctuary
“We are at the heart of a protected natural area of 350 km2 entirely dedicated to the protection of water, to supply our network”, explains Christoph Rigler, water management engineer and manager of Kläfferquelle. The city of Vienne invested more than a century ago in these lands to sanctuary them. “In terms of tourism, only hiking is allowed here”, continues the engineer. Underground, 70 springs flow, well protected. The spring water descends naturally, by gravity, to Vienna, via a hundred century-old aqueducts. No treatment is necessary up to the tap.
