Final Fantasy 16 looks insane. The first feedback is unanimous for the moment, even if there are still some gray areas. Fans meanwhile are still divided, and rightly so.

The next big chunk of the franchise marks a real break with previous installments, notably by completely embracing its action orientation for fighting. With a veteran Devil May Cry behind the scenes, hard to expect anything else. In any case, Final Fantasy 16 promises to be nervous and epic.

However, despite this important difference, Final Fantasy 16 remains an FF. Naoki Yoshida, big boss on the project, said that this sixteenth episode of the numbered saga will offer everything a Final Fantasy is supposed to offer. Even better, according to a recent interview for Play Magazinethe next JRPG will even be inspired by old opuses, including a game considered cult by a whole bunch of fans.

Final Fantasy 16 will copy its elders

As we know, this new FF will not be a fully open world, but will instead feature exploration in semi-open areas. However, Clive (our hero in the game) will travel around the world several times. We will see the country, and to travel from one region to another, we will have the right to a world map. It is the latter which will be directly inspired by previous games, including Final Fantasy 10. Naoki Yoshida thus declares that FF16 will have a map of the world. He also specifies that “on this map there are areas you can go to, you will be able to select them and then travel to those areas seamlessly”. A structure similar to what could be found in Final Fantasy 10. Fans of the franchise will therefore not be so disoriented.

Furthermore, Yoshida makes an important point. Once the main quest is completed in a visitable region, you automatically return to what appears to be a base called “The Hideaway”. A hub in short, through which we will obviously often pass and which will allow us to breathe between two missions. From this base, it will be possible to manage your next outings, your equipment, etc.
Moreover, at any time, it will be possible to return to the regions already visited to explore more, do side quests, and others.

If it will be much less open than FF15, Final Fantasy 16 should, however, offer a lot of exploration and a few extras. You can also pose the main quest at any time.
This new part of the franchise therefore promises to be generous. But we will wait to have the beast in our hands to be sure.

As a reminder, Final Fantasy 16 is expected exclusively on PS5 from June 22, 2023.
