After the function has been available for customers with Android smartphones for several months, Google is now also launching it for iOS in his home app support for the new smart home standard Matter, which is intended to ensure greater device interoperability. Like google in the Google Nest Community blog, you want to offer the technology very soon. The prerequisite, however, is iOS 16.5, which Apple is about to release.

“We are now expanding Matter support in the Home app on iOS. In the coming weeks with iOS 16.5 you will be able to set up and control your Matter devices in the Google Home app on iOS devices”, writes the company. The Home app is Google’s central control app, which can be used to control Google Nest, Google Home, Chromecast and Google Wifi devices. Other accessories are also set up, such as lighting, thermostats or cameras.

The new home app should be available from today, the last update before that was from May 2nd. However, Matter will not be released immediately because, as mentioned, Google has to wait for Apple and iOS 16.5. Google did not specify why this is exactly the case. Other innovations relate to the camera control. So you should soon be able to view the timeline in landscape format, which makes it much easier to use. Google is initially starting with the Pixel Tablet, but will also be introducing the function for the iPhone later this summer. Apple’s Home app has long been able to do this for HomeKit Secure Video cameras in the competing HomeKit system.

In general, Google Home is based quite clearly on Apple Home – so there is a tile look like Apple. A total of over 50 improvements and new functions for the application are to be released after there was a public preview version for Android. These should gradually arrive in iOS.

This includes accelerating the live feed from cameras, and clip retrieval is also faster. There is also a new activities tab that shows the latest important events of the devices. Notifications will also be better organized and recordings from cameras will be sorted more clearly. Google Home is offered for the iPhone and iPad, although the tablet version doesn’t really make use of the larger screen. A Mac version is missing so far.
