Grand Theft Auto Online has a hole in its security system, which leaves PC players vulnerable to cyber attacks. The issue has resulted in lost game currency and (in some cases) deleted accounts, and can potentially be used to introduce viruses onto your machine.

As Twitter user Tez2 recently reported (via PC Gamer) several PC players have experienced that they have lost progress and items in GTA Online. Others have completely lost the ability to log into the online game’s servers.

The article continues below the Twitter message.

It is the aforementioned hole in GTA Online’s security system that allows malicious players access to your files. Right now it’s only about the game’s files, but as PC Gamer writes, it could soon mean that they get full access to your entire PC and can thus upload viruses and other unwanted programs.

The problem is apparently the same one that shut down the multiplayer servers for all Dark Souls games for several months last year.

On the night of Tuesday, Rockstar took over Twitter to let the developer know about the matter. The team is now working on a security-focused update for the game, which aims to solve this very problem.

Exactly when the update will arrive is currently unclear. In the meantime, Rockstar is asking that you contacts customer service if you have been affected by the error.
