Gudrun Schyman, who is a politician in Simrishamn, is protesting, together with a small group of peace and environmental activists, against the large military exercise Aurora which is taking place in various places in the country, including in the neighboring municipality of Ystad.

– It is not through war that we win peace. It is not by doing violence to people and the environment that we defend the earth, she says.

In the harbor in Ystad, the Home Guard practices while waiting for more soldiers from Sweden and other countries to arrive there. They are seen and heard in the city, but in the next week it will be much more assumed that the largest military exercise in 30 years is taking place.

– I think the climate is affected quite a bit by this exercise, says Karl-Johan Nyberg, exercise leader for the southern military region.

What do you base that on?

– There are not a lot of people, even though there are 26,000 people and many vehicles, the exercise is spread over large parts of the country.

In the harbor in Ystad, the activists sing peace songs and hold up banners for peace and against NATO and Aurora 23.

– Even if there are not a hundred of us but only ten, I think many appreciate that we are here, says Gudrun Schyman.
