After much speculation following the change of venue, Argentina will end up hosting this year’s Under-20 World Cup in what is expected to be one of the biggest events of the sporting year in the land of world champions.
After failing to qualify for the South American Under-20 tournament that was played in Colombia, Javier Mascherano decided to resign as coach but at the request of Lionel Scaloni and Claudio Tapia, president of the AFA, the historic player decided to continue in office for the express request of these two.
In the last hours, Mascherano decided to share with the public the list of 21 players who will defend the light blue and white but who will also seek to achieve the seventh world championship in the category (a record in FIFA competitions). Training will begin next Monday, May 8, so it is expected that the Argentine team will have a marked style of play and will be the protagonist in this tournament.
Next, these are the players:
Federico Gomes Gerth, Lucas Lavagnino and Nicolás Cláa are chosen to defend the three sticks of the national team. The peculiarity is that these three play in Argentine soccer (Tigre, River and Lanús respectively) but none of them play in the first division.
Agustín Giay, Tomás Avilés, Lautaro Di Lollo, Valentín Gómez, Román Vega and Valentín Barco. They all got minutes with the Under-20s at some point in their careers but they have also made appearances in the First Division so they have the necessary experience to play at this level. The only one who works abroad is Vega who does it at Barcelona.
Mateo Tanlongo, Federico Redondo, Máximo Perrone, Gino Infantino, Ignacio Miramón, Valentín Carboni and Juan Gauto. This is the sector of the playing field where the coach has the most flexibility since all the players can play in any position in the midfield and at a high level. They promise, and a lot, the names of
Matias Soulé, Luka Romero, Alejo Véliz, Brian Aguirre, Ignacio Maestro Puch, Juan Gauto. Another place on the playing field that has plenty of quality but with many chances to shine throughout the tournament.

Why are Alejandro Garnacho, Nicolás Paz and Facundo Buonanotte not on the list of 21 players?
These three players were a fixture for Javier Mascherano but both Manchester United and Real Madrid and Brighton decided not to give up these players despite the fact that the respective teams have very little time left this season. On the side of the English teams, both players are part of the squads that want to qualify for European competitions while Paz is a key part of Castilla that has important games at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.
