Iran blames the US for difficulties in closing a prisoner swap deal

MADRID, July 24 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Government of Iran has blamed the United States on Monday for the difficulties in reaching an agreement for a possible exchange of prisoners and has lamented that Washington “lacks determination” when it comes to finalizing a pact.

“The prolongation of this process unfortunately derives from the lack of determination on the part of the United States government,” said the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Naser Kanani, according to the Iranian news agency Tasnim.

Likewise, he has declined to comment on the information about the detention of a fourth US citizen in Iran and has pointed to the efforts of several countries that maintain “good relations” with Tehran and Washington to conclude an agreement.

Iran and the United States have carried out two prisoner exchanges since the signing of the 2015 nuclear agreement, seriously damaged by Washington’s decision to withdraw from it in 2018 alleging violations of the pact by Tehran.

The talks for the restoration of the 2015 nuclear agreement have been stalled for months, while the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed progress in the program by the Iranian authorities, who maintain that they have only peaceful purposes.
