On the occasion of the day of the protection of personal data, UFC-Que Choisir launches a tool which allows to analyze its data of several applications to realize what is collected.

Instagram, Uber, Netflix… All the applications we use on a daily basis collect our data and our history. But not all collect the same information. To find out what data is collected, UFC-Que Choisir launches the tool Respect my dates and makes it easier to delete them.

The site offers the user to analyze his data history from different platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Netflix, TikTok, Google or Uber. To do this, the user must upload their data on each platform. It is done in a few steps, explained in detail on the site for each of them.

For example, to recover your data on Instagram, you have to connect from a computer, go to the settings, click on Privacy and Securitythen on Download datathen click Request a download.

On the UFC-Que Choisir website, click on the chosen social network and then on analyze data. Once the data has been retrieved, drag the data into the box provided for this purpose then click on Explore your data.

A galaxy of graphics appears, classified into several categories. For Instagram, the tool analyzes views, likes, messages or even the timeline of activities on the application. The user can thus see the number of hours spent on the application since his registration, the most consulted profiles, the last “likes”, the accounts he likes the most, the last messages, the accounts with who he exchanges the most or his connection habits.

For other applications such as Uber for example, the site also displays route maps, race history and cumulative expenses. Google is the one that collects the most precise data: places visited, the number of hours spent in a specific place, GPS coordinates or Wi-Fi tracking.

An informed user knows that all this data is already recovered by these applications but the graphic visuals give a precise idea of ​​what this mountain of data represents.

Delete personal data

The UFC-Que Choisir tool does not stop there. It offers a simplified method for asserting your rights. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) allows users to ask any company to provide or delete collected data. tab Exercise your rights allows you to ask a platform or site to delete data about you.

To do this, you must first identify the name of the company and not just one of the platforms mentioned above. Then select a type of request: ask the company to communicate the data it holds on you and obtain a copy, object at any time to an organization using certain data, correct information or delete their data.

You must enter your surname, first name, an email or a telephone number. The tool will then generate a standard email and send a message to the company concerned. Requests can take between several days or several months depending on the requests.
