Las Vegas university shooting, police find suspect dead

LAS VEGAS — Several victims were taken to hospitals Wednesday after a gunman began shooting in the Universidad of Nevada Las Vegas campus. The boss of the police County Sheriff’s Office said there was no additional threat after officers located the suspect, who died.

At this time, the number of people who were shot or their state of health is unknown. Police Chief Kevin McMahill did not say whether any of the victims had died.

“There are several victims who have been taken to area hospitals,” McMahill told reporters. “So I don’t want to give you false information and tell you how many victims we have. But we will provide you with an update very, very soon.”

Police received reports of an active shooter on campus at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, said university police officer Adam Garcia. He commented that officers found and “confronted” a suspect, who lost his life. It is not immediately clear how he died.

The university posted on short distance from the place.

Las Vegas police posted on X about 40 minutes after the first alert that a suspect “has been located and is dead.”

Students and the university community were alerted by a publication in X from the university.

“This is not a drill,” the university wrote. “Run, hide, fight.”

An Associated Press reporter saw a team of SWAT agents wearing FBI badges flocking onto the campus shortly before 1 p.m. after police reported the suspect dead.

University employees asked on social media that people still on campus remain protected: “This is still an active investigation.”

Matthew Felsenfeld said he and about 12 classmates barricaded themselves in a building near the student union.

“It’s time for them to call their parents and tell them they love them,” said Felsenfeld, a 21-year-old journalism student.

He said he did not hear gunshots or see anyone injured, but through the window he saw police ready to enter the adjacent building. A short time later, the police arrived and took them away.
