President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sanctioned, this Monday (8), the Bill (PL) 8.131/2017, which includes the National Oral Health Policy – Smiling Brazil, in the Organic Law of Health. In a ceremony at the Planalto Palace, the president said that the resumption of the program recovers people’s dignity.
“The reality is that people like to be treated well, but they don’t treat themselves because they can’t. Nobody likes to be toothless, to have dirty teeth, to appear ugly in front of others. And Brasil Sorridente is an extraordinary thing, because it recovers not the smile, but the dignity of the human being, the pride of the human being”, he said.

According to the federal government, the resumption of the program will guarantee universal, equitable and continuous access to oral health services, which will become part of the SUS permanently. Created in 2004, Brasil Sorridente seeks to combat the difficulty of accessing oral health, especially for the most vulnerable population and in regions with poor health care.
“All of this, for me, is an investment. Don’t talk to me about spending. Taking care of the people’s health is an investment because a healthy citizen is much more productive and much more useful than a sick citizen, without strength and without quality to provide the service he would like to provide”, completed Lula.
