Madrid.- Meryl Streep won one of Spain’s most prestigious awards for “dignifying the art of acting,” said the jury for the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts on Wednesday.

In her almost five decades on screen, Streep has “developed a brilliant career chaining performances in which she gives life to rich and complex female characters, which invite reflection and the formation of the viewer’s critical spirit,” said the jury in his record.

The 73-year-old actress has multiple awards, including three Oscars for her work in “Kramer vs. Kramer” (“Kramer vs. Kramer”), “Sophie’s Choice” (“Sophie’s Decision”) and “The Iron Lady” (“The Iron Lady”).

The award, which includes an economic prize of 50,000 euros (55,000 dollars), is one of the eight that the Princess of Asturias Foundation distributes annually. In the coming days, the winners of the other categories, including Communication, Science or Sports, will be announced.

Flamenco dancers Carmen Linares and María Pagés won the award last year. Among the winners are also the English director Peter Brook and the American filmmakers Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola.

The awards ceremony is held in October in Oviedo, a city in the north of Spain.
