In recent months, it has been difficult to miss ChatGPT and its AI easily accessible to everyone on the internet. This technology intrigues many people, but also raises many ethical questions. In the meantime, large groups only see it as a great opportunity to develop in the image of Microsoft.
After the investment of one billion in 2019 in OpenAI, Microsoft would like to invest 10 billion this year
In case you weren’t aware, the Redmond firm actually started investing in this sector in 2019 by investing a billion dollars in the OpenAI company, which is notably at the origin of ChatGPT. Today is a recent report published by Semafor
which tells us that a new investment of 10 billion dollars would now be considered and that the deadline for the conclusion of the agreement was set at the end of 2022.
Microsoft and OpenAI have been collaborating for four years and this has allowed OpenAI to have Microsoft’s Azure AI supercomputer to create GPT-3.5, notably powering ChatGPT.
If a new agreement were signed, Microsoft would receive 75% of OpenAI’s profits until it recovers its investment, the Redmond firm would own 49% of OpenAI’s shares, other investors would own the other 49% and OpenAI the remaining 2%.
Microsoft would like to integrate ChatGPT and OpenAI services in its Bing search engine as well as in the Office suite. This could fix OpenAI, which is currently losing money by making ChatGPT accessible to everyone on the web (a few cents per use) because the company has to pay Microsoft to operate its cloud. A new agreement between the two groups would remedy this.
Microsoft remains focused on the future and beyond economic interests, it’s a safe bet that the Redmond firm has many ideas in mind to exploit OpenAI technologies through the Microsoft ecosystem. Many companies are looking into AI and by sealing such an agreement with one of the leaders in the sector, Microsoft would take a significant advantage over other companies.
