Peru-Chile Migration Crisis: Blockades on the southern border and clashes with the PNP

The Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Yvan Gilinformed that he is in contact with Peru and Chile because of the situation at the borders. In this sense, he mentioned that planes will be deployed at points of Tacna and Arica.

“In relation to the situation of Venezuelan migrants blocked on the border between Chile and Peru, we have been in contact with both foreign ministries and requested full guarantees and respect for the human rights of our compatriots,” he wrote on Twitter.

Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi indicated that the governments of Peru and Chile have agreed on new measures to deal with the irregular migratory flow on the border of neighboring countries.

“There were constant conversations between our foreign ministries and other authorities, and yesterday afternoon I had a conversation with the Chilean foreign minister (Alberto van Klaveren) and we have agreed on measures between our authorities to better control the flow of migrants at our common border,” he said. .

The Peruvian Episcopal Conference invoked the authorities of Peru and Chile to solve the migration crisis on the border between the two countries. Through a statement, the bishops who head this institution announced their position on the aforementioned issue.

“We view with deep concern the crisis that has originated with Venezuelan migrants on the border of Peru and Chile,” it is indicated.

The head of the Interior reported that he met yesterday afternoon with different authorities from the Tacna region to see how they are handling the migration crisis and stressed that there is a commitment in this regard, informs Andina.

The Ombudsman of Tacna, Edwar Vargas, told the newspaper OJO that a humanitarian corridor is an important way out, but “it cannot be implemented overnight.”

“A corridor will be viable only if all the countries, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and especially Venezuela agree,” he said.

On the other hand, the head of the XIV Police Macroregion of Tacna and Moquegua, PNP General Edinson Hernández Moreno, highlighted the assignment of 390 police officers to monitor and prevent foreigners from entering national territory through unauthorized roads.

A total of 12 observation posts, from milestone 1 to milestone 15, will be established by the 196 members of the Peruvian Army and the Peruvian Air Force (FAP) who arrived this afternoon at the Peru-Chile border, where they will monitor and protect the national territory in the presence of migrants.

The members of the Armed Forces will be installed 100 meters behind the border line with Chile. To carry out the work of supporting the Police, there are 22 vehicles, in addition to logistical support for their permanence 24 hours a day for a period of 60 days.
