Samsung Electronics kicks off its CES 2023 by unveiling two impressive PC monitors. The first is an exxxxtra-wide screen, 57 inches in 32:9 format, the other is an ultra-wide screen in QD-OLED. Both screens are cut out for gaming.
Few screens could compete with the Neo G9 (2022). A 49-inch curved ultra-wide screen with a 32:9 ratio (definition of 5120 x 1440 pixels) with a Mini LED panel and a refresh rate of up to 240 Hz. A very imposing monster, but with incredible performance.
57 inches diagonally in 8K definition!
For CES 2023, Samsung Electronics goes even further, since we discover the Odyssey Neo G9 (G95NC), a curved monitor (1000R) in Mini LED which extends over 57 inches in an 8K definition (7680 x 2160 pixels) with an aspect ratio of 32:9. This is Samsung’s largest PC monitor to date. It dwarfs the 55-inch Odyssey Ark. For this 57-inch format, imagine sticking two 4K screens side by side… it will take up a lot of space on the desk.
As already explained several times (we’ll start over, we’re here for that), the big advantages of Mini LED compared to traditional LED is that it offers better brightness, more contrast and fewer halo problems. How ? The Mini LED is a miniaturization of the diodes for the backlighting, which makes it possible to have more zones of control to offer a control of the contrasts much more accomplished.
Samsung hasn’t announced everything, since the Korean manufacturer is keeping some details for the time being, such as the exact brightness of this beastly screen and the number of local dimming zones. We just know that native refresh rate is 240Hz.
It also incorporates the brand new connectivity Display Port 2.1. This new standard makes it possible to transmit 4K Ultra HD at 480 Hz and 8K Ultra HD at 165 Hz. Here, the Odyssey Neo G9 (2023) is in 4K (extra wide) at 240 Hz.
The Odyssey Neo G9 is certified by VESA in HDR 1000 (and therefore at least 1000 nits)and Samsung says it offers ” a superior image in any gaming environment, from shadows to bright scenes “. We look forward to confronting these claims with our tests.
The 49-inch version goes OLED
The 49-inch version, still the Odyssey G9 with the Odyssey OLED G95SC, goes OLED (instead of Mini LED). And, certainly, QD-OLED from Samsung Display. This is not the first QD-OLED screen from Samsung, there is already the 34-inch QHD Odyssey G8 monitor (a 55-inch panel cut in half).
We are still talking about a QHD + definition, the equivalent of two QHD screens side by side, with a curved panel (1800R). It only has DisplayPort 1.4, but that’s enough for its specs. Incidentally, both Samsung monitors also include USB-C charging up to 65 watts.
The Odyssey Neo G9 and Odyssey OLED G9 support AMD FreeSync Premium. They also come with Samsung Smart Hub and Game Hub. This gives you direct access to streaming apps like Prime Video, Netflix, and YouTube without even connecting to a PC. Likewise, Game Hub lets you stream games from Xbox Game Pass and Nvidia GeForce Now.
We do not yet have information on the availability of these two PC screens, nor their prices (which will be salty). Note that Samsung also unveiled a 43-inch screen, the Odyssey Neo G7.
