Some Essen residents should use the weekend to decorate the Christmas tree: Monday (January 9th) collection starts in the first parts of the city.

Oh Christmas Tree! They are still adorned with Christmas tree balls and tinsel in many Essen houses, but some Essen residents should perhaps use this weekend to decorate their trees: On Monday, January 9th, Essen Disposal Services (EBE) will start collecting the disused Christmas trees.

adorned Christmas trees will be picked up at the front doors from Monday, January 9thwithout the citizens incurring any additional costs, as emphasized by the EBE. District after district will be approached until January 20th. There is a specific date for each address. EBE has published an overview with all the details on their website. EBE: Christmas trees must be completely decorated

The disposal companies ask that Christmas trees be placed unpacked and clearly visible on the roadside at the scheduled collection time and not placed next to the garbage cans. The tree should ideally be ready the evening before or no later than 6 a.m. on the day of collection. The disused Christmas tree must be completely decorated, and tinsel must also be removed. Large trees longer than two meters must be divided. The trunks may have a maximum diameter of ten centimetres.

If you want to get rid of your old tree before the EBE collection dates or if you missed your appointment, you can hand it in at the recycling yards, at the recycling stations and at the green collection points of the waste disposal companies. The brown bin, on the other hand, is the wrong place for old Christmas trees because trunks and branches are not suitable for fermentation in the biogas plant.

Church communities, associations and institutions have to pay for the service

The disposal companies point out that the free pick-up service only applies to private households. Trees from parishes, associations and other institutions or events must be disposed of at a cost.

The EBE collect an average of around 90,000 Christmas trees every year. The trees are shredded into wood chips that are used to produce carbon-neutral energy.

From January 2nd, 2023, the disposal companies will again set up a Christmas tree hotline for all information relating to Christmas tree collection: This can be reached from Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on telephone number 0201/854-2412 until January 31st .

The collection can be seen with a green Christmas tree symbol for each address in the online collection calendar and in the EBE app “We’re clearing away”. The EBE app “We’re clearing it up!” is available for Android and iOS operating systems to download free of charge from the respective stores.
