The governor of California declares a state of emergency before the arrival of Hurricane Hilary

California Governor Gavin Newsom has proclaimed a state of emergency for much of the southern part of the state to support Hurricane Hilary response and recovery efforts while continuing to mobilize and coordinate resources ahead of the storm’s forecast impacts. starting this Sunday.

Newsom signed the emergency proclamation in San Diego while visiting California National Guard troops, his own office said in a statement.

He has also met with first responders and local officials, including San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, and has been in contact with federal officials, including the White House.

“California has thousands of people on the ground working hand in hand with federal and local personnel to support communities in the path of Hurricane Hilary with resources, equipment and expertise. We are mobilizing the whole of government as we prepare for and respond to this unprecedented storm,” declared the governor.

Under his direction, there are currently more than 7,500 recruits on the ground deployed to help local communities protect Californians from the impacts of Hurricane Hilary.

Hurricane Hilary is still a Category 2 storm that, according to the National Hurricane Center, is expected to bring “catastrophic and life-threatening flooding” to Baja California and the southwestern United States including Southern California. Much of the storm’s impacts, including heavy rain and strong winds, are expected to begin Sunday and last through Monday.
