The detachment of a convoy of the Collective Transport System (STC) Subway generated fear in the users of the line 7who, as documented on social networks, quickly evacuated the train that covered the station in smoke polanco.

The incident was again pointed out as a “outlier” by the authorities of Mexico City (CDMX), who held a press conference to explain the causes of the most recent altercation and thus support their position.

As confirmed by Guillermo Calderon, director of Collective Transport, the separation caused in cars six and seven when the train began its march in the direction of Rosario. In this sense, the official explained the reason for the noise which witnesses referred to as predecessor to the cloud of white smoke.

“When the connection cables are uncoupled, they touch the electrified guide bar (and) they are the ones that produce the noise and smoke that users refer to.”

Regarding the separation of the wagons, the authorities referred – although in a preliminary way – that the cause derived from a failure in the coupling systemspecifically, the detachment of the safety cylinder that serves as “the coupling element between the two trains.”

It is important to mention that the union of two trains depends on said piece of steel (the cylinder) being fully supported by a security plate (a second security element), which, in turn, must be secured by two clamping screws. It is also important that the cylinder has a insurance/tape placed at the bottom.

Thus, Guillermo Calderón explained that the two wagons involved in the Line 7 accident were separated because the security plate was displaced as a result of the bad conditions of the two screws (one of them was found loose and another decapitated), causing the cylinder that couples both units to get out of place.

However, the director added that the output of the cylinder was also influenced by the absence of the lower security strap: “This security band, which is very difficult to detach, was not found in the inspection that was carried out after having evacuated the road and during the night (…) One thing to draw attention to”, he stressed.

“The cylinder came out when the lower security lock was lost and the plate moved because one screw was loose and the other was cut.”

The director of the Metro delved into the causes of the separation of two wagons at the Polanco station of the CDMX Metro

Despite the fact that the analyzes revealed a failure in the coupling system, director Guillermo Calderón ruled out a lack of maintenance as a cause of the separation of wagons.

As reported, the convoy underwent a timely systematic maintenance process on January 5, 2023; a process which, he highlighted, is carried out every time 10 to 12 thousand kilometers are reached, that is, an average of approximately 30 days.

“It is not a matter of maintenance because these security systems are checked precisely in it,” commented the director and assured that the train would not have been put into operation if maintenance had detected any indication of failure in the coupling system.

“That is why yesterday’s situation is an atypical, unusual situation, because that safety ring on the steel cylinder is very difficult for it to come off.”
