Like every day, Numerama guides you through the huge offer of SVOD platforms. On this Wednesday, February 22, 2023, we invite you to dive into the impossible investigation of The Night of 12, an essential and terribly topical thriller, on Canal+ since last night. The movie is nominated in 11 categories for the next Cesar Ceremony, which will take place this Friday, February 24, 2023.

The Night of 12 on Canal+ is nominated for the Césars 2023

Clara is a twenty-something like the others: she likes to spend evenings with her friends and live passionate love stories. But one evening, Clara is burned alive, in the middle of the street, by a stranger. For the team of the PJ (Judicial Police), then begins a long work of investigation to find the culprit. The interrogations are linked, but the evidence is lacking and the inspectors have only one certainty: the murder took place on the night of October 12.

From its opening, The Night of 12 plays cards on the table with the spectator: what you are about to see is an unsolved affair, of which there are hundreds every year. From then on, the challenge of finding the assassin during these two hours flies away, even if the hope still persists deep inside us, that justice will be done for Clara.

Directed by Dominik Moll (Harry, a friend who wishes you well), The Night of 12 is a trying thriller, from which you come out washed, overwhelmed by the still heavy weight of patriarchal violence. The film thus develops a deeply feminist narrative, where the guilt of all men is questioned without detours, proving the systemic nature of feminicides. The intelligence of the feature film is to also question the sexism of the police forces, which begin by searching Clara’s private life and her slightest missteps, even before considering her as the victim of a crime. The investigation is also led by the excellent Bastien Bouillon (Oussekine) and Bouli Lanners (Hippocrates), in opposite but complementary roles: the silent cop VS the nervous. As Clara’s best friend, Pauline Serieys (The Great) surprises again by the mastery of his game.

So let’s be clear: The Night of 12 is one of the best movies of the year 2022, which resonates so strongly with our demoralizing news (as of February 7, 2023, already 12 feminicides have taken place since the beginning of the year). We can only hope that this thriller will reap the rain of rewards it deserves at the next César, this Friday, February 24, 2023. In the meantime, we just have a furious desire to contribute, again and again, to the feminist revolution.
