Mexico City.- While the presidents of the United States, Joe Biden, and Canada, Justin Trudeau, highlighted the importance of clean energy for the development of the region, the issue was not even mentioned by the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

During the message on the occasion of the X Trilateral Summit of North American Leaders, delivered at the National Palace, Mexico’s trade partners stressed the need to promote the transition to electric vehicles, reduce emissions and comply with the Paris agreements, to cope with climate change.

Trudeau was the most insistent on the urgency of achieving a strong but clean economy.

“We can further boost our economic resilience by working to create a clean economy, things like clean energy, including hydrogen, manufacturing zero-emission vehicles, and encouraging more people to adopt them. This is a huge opportunity for workers and for companies,” he said.

“We must all be part of the climate action of governments and the private sector must work with one to achieve the 2030 objectives. These objectives are not only to reduce pollution to achieve the Paris goals, they also refer to our commitment to conserve 30 percent of our land and oceans by 2030.”

For his part, Biden urged the leaders to become global leaders in clean energy and advance the technological transition.

“We talked about our commitments to make North America a clean energy hotspot, and I think that’s within our reach. And we can be global leaders on the climate crisis, that means working together,” he said.

“To have zero emission vehicles, to establish electric vehicle charging stations that go across our international borders, that means exploring markets for energy from hydrogen. And working to achieve our ambitious goals under the Paris Agreement , including carbon emissions and coal”.

The only mention of López Obrador related to the subject was the reference to the Sembrando Vida Program, focused on planting trees.

However, the President only included it as part of the list of support provided by his Government from the Welfare Secretariat.

“We have the most important reforestation program in the world, more than 1 million hectares of fruit and timber trees are being planted, and more than 400,000 farmers, planters, are given work,” he added.
