The relatives of a Cuban who is detained by the Department of Immigration and Customs Control (ICE) in Miami decided to celebrate his birthday despite the fact that he is in prison.

Relatives and friends of Sergio Pérez held a small celebration on Tuesday, with cake included, in front of the Krome Center headquarters, in the southwest of the Florida city.

“I thought I was with my family, with my son. I thought I was enjoying what was going to be my first birthday with my son here,” Sergio told journalist Javier Díaz, from Univision.

Among those present was his 10-year-old son Jordán, who has pleaded several times before the press for his father’s release and for him not to be returned to Cuba.

Last week, Jordán attended the program of the journalist Juan Manuel Cao, from the channel America TeVewhere he reported that if his father is deported he would be left without his main breadwinner in the United Statessince her mother is on the Island with her current husband.

The minor arrived in the country with his grandmother through the southern border just a few months ago. The lady can apply for her residency through the Cuban Adjustment Act, but the child’s immigration status is uncertain.

His father has been in the country for four years. last June 9 He went to his immigration appointment at the ICE office and they left him detainedso the family’s fear is that they will be deported.

“Please that Don’t deport him to me, because it’s the only thing I have here” Little Jordan said on that occasion to the journalist Javier Díaz.

Pérez Amigo’s aunt, named Ana Rodríguez, participated last Sunday together with relatives of other Cubans detained and in danger of deportation in a protest in front of the iconic Versailles restaurant in Miami.

“They want to make another political prisoner in Cuba. The deportations must be stopped,” the woman shouted.

The hope of this Cuban immigrant and of hundreds of compatriots with a final order of deportation is a recent United States Supreme Court rulingwhich restored the Biden administration’s policy on the expulsion of undocumented immigrants.

The Supreme Court endorsed the strategy implemented by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in 2021 on the priorities of applying immigration law and deporting people who constitute threats to public safety.

The judicial decision gives a second wind to thousands of immigrants who have a final order of deportation and have not committed serious crimes during their stay in the country, including many Cubans.

Pérez Amigo is part of the group of 36 Cubans who were arrested by ICE in October 2022 to be deported, and that after intense protests by their relatives and pressure from local politicians, they were released.
