“Yes, I have that – right to always do what I want,” raps Barbara Schirin Davidavicius in her song “I can do that” and apparently also lives by this motto. Davidavicius, better known as the most successful German rapper Shirin David, is immune to criticism. At least they are not bothered by the countless critical comments in the last few days and weeks under their posts on their social media channels.

Shirin David is the face of the current McDonald’s campaign, and that even causes resentment among her fans. Not only because McDonald’s was a sponsor of the World Cup in Qatar, which was criticized for human rights violations in the country, but also, and David’s critics seem particularly upset by this, because the company stands for meat consumption like no other.

One of the many who has David on the Kieker because of this is the influencer and doctor Aljoscha Muttardi, who rose to prominence as a judge on the Netflix series Queer Eye. He campaigns online for veganism and queer-related issues.

However, both Muttardi and the numerous negative comments leave David cold, because she even goes one better: In another advertising clip for the fast food chain, she poses, together with a cardboard display of herself, in front of a McDonald’s branch and wears a combination pink fur high heels, fur gloves and fur hat.

According to some keen animal rights activists, this is real fur, an even worse sin than chicken nuggets or bacon burgers, which is what really sparked the shitstorm about David.

This really enrages the very upset Muttardi. Because David ignores criticism, he calls on his followers to publicly ask the companies that work with David why they continue to work with a person who has a “huge big FU,” according to the wording, referring to all animal welfare activists and people with “a spark empathy” react.

May I? Yes, I can do that – bad luck! do I do it? Yes, I’ll do it – really! Do I have it? Yes, I have the – right to always do and not do what I want.

That shouldn’t matter to David either if she lives on, which she says openly: “Always to do and do what I want”. And obviously that’s one of the reasons why it’s so successful. David has managed to use the female “bad ass” principle of success of American rappers like the former stripper Cardi B to import to Germany. In this country, that obviously overwhelms some.

And that seems to be due to the fact that sexism and harsh language are less tolerated by women than by men. Shirin David makes hip-hop with a huge portion of boasting and offensively calls her second album “Bitches need rap”. So she does what countless male rappers in the industry do every day – including real fur and advertising for fast food chains. Anyone who is bothered by this should at least take a critical look at the entire industry.
