Cruise ships sound like fun, but behind that lies a dramatic ecological reality. And what better than a situation that is getting worse day by day to put on the seas a massive vessel, the largest in the world, which also consumes the most in the world.
A boat beyond belief..
Surely you know many height records that exist, such as the tallest tower in the world over 800 meters in Dubai, or the deepest tunnel in the world plunged 10 kilometers deep. Heaps of record numbers for elements that are static and well anchored in the ground. But this time it’s different. Here, we are talking about the biggest passenger boat ever built.
A boat, it moves, and it’s even more impressive to see a gigantic version able to move on the water. If the Titanic was a record for its time, you’re not ready for what’s to come, because in March 2022, the Wonder of the Seas (Merveille des Mers) took off (well, you get the idea) and then started to receive passengers to take them on a cruise.
So let’s start with the numbers, I suspect that you are also here for that. Built between October 2019 and November 2021, Wonder of the Seas measures no less than 362 meters long. It’s about 3 and a half football pitches. For the width, we are on a humble 66 meters. Add to that 73 meters high, and we get a real monster. In total, we find 2867 cabins can accommodate 6988 passengers and 2394 crew members, i.e. 9422 people present on the ship.

- A 5.4 meter deep aquatic pit for diving

…but destroying the planet
But of course, not everything is rosy, because the reality behind this kind of achievement is the impact Wonder of the Seas has for the planet. And for once, it bears its name badly this boat, because it is far from being a marvel for Mother Nature. The machine weighs 237,000 tons. It’s titanic, and to tow all this mass, you need very powerful engines, and therefore a lot of fuel.
The figures are frightening: 25,800 liters per 100 km, or a total of 270 tonnes per day for non-stop navigation at 22 knots, average speed. In June 2022, the boat arrived at the port of Marseille for minor alterations, and was stopped by canoe activists blocking the entrance, members of Extinction Rebellion, an environmental movement.
