Microsoft will start the first price increase for the current Xbox consoles in mid-February. As has now been leaked, prices will increase in Japan first – even if Microsoft had ruled out price increases until recently.

However, Microsoft has now announced a 5,000 yen MSRP price increase for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles in Japan. That has that Online magazine Famitsu reported. The new prices should come into effect on February 17, 2023.

The suggested retail price of the Xbox Series X increases from 54,978 yen to 59,978 yen, and that of the Xbox Series S from 32,278 yen to 37,978 yen. Converted into euros, this is a price difference of around 35 euros to the old price. The Series X will then cost 420 euros, the Series S 270 euros. However, this is only the RRP, the real prices could remain at the current level – time will tell.

Microsoft changes local pricing, launching in Japan

A statement from Microsoft Japan said: “After carefully reviewing market conditions in Japan, we have decided to change the Xbox console suggested retail price in Japan. We regularly assess the impact of local pricing to ensure appropriate consistency across regions This price change affects our customers and was a difficult decision, but we will continue to deliver the ultimate Xbox experience our customers have come to expect.” Microsoft commented on the price increase at Sony PlayStation in August last year and confirmed that no adjustments are planned for the Xbox. Now, almost half a year later, the time has come and Microsoft is taking the same step. So far there has been no statement on possible price adjustments in other countries. It is therefore still unclear how prices will develop in Europe or the USA.
