1 Dead, Several Injured in Omaha Shooting

A 16-year-old boy died and seven other people went to local hospitals for treatment early Sunday following two shooting incidents in North Omaha.

Lamarantae Swift was shot about 2:30 a.m. during a large gathering near 24th and Decatur Streets, an Omaha police spokesman said. He was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center with lifesaving measures in progress but was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Two people from that incident walked into the Nebraska Medical Center, and three others walked into the Creighton University Medical Center-University Campus at 24th and Cuming Streets. Those injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, the spokesman said.

“The violent loss of a young person’s life and the injuries to multiple people is intolerable for our community and causes deep sadness,” Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said. “Additional police resources are being used to aggressively investigate this matter.”

Swift’s death represents the 18th homicide in Omaha this year. That compares with 22 homicides at this time in 2022 and 25 in 2021.

Earlier, police were called about 1 a.m. to investigate a shooting that occurred near 27th and Browne Streets. Officers arrived and located Olajuwon Burnett, 39, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers also located Jelisa Arias, 30, suffering from a gunshot wound. Both parties were transported to the Nebraska Medical Center with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening.

Anyone with information about either incident is urged to contact the Omaha Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 402-444-5656.

Tipsters are eligible for a $25,000 cash reward for information leading to a homicide arrest and $10,000 for information leading to a shooting arrest.
