Under the motto “Off to the tithe!” the Bamberg gardeners cordially invite you to the 10th anniversary of their “Open Garden Center Day” on Sunday, April 30, 2023. As the city of Bamberg explains, the large gardening gates in the gardening city of Bamberg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will then open and reveal exclusive views of the inner-city green landscape. Exactly 10 nurseries from all over the city, from vegetable, fruit, herb and ornamental plant nurseries to perennial gardens, provide exciting insights into their daily work. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. they invite you to look, marvel and participate.

In addition to professional tips and explanations of the latest garden trends from the master gardeners, the splendor of springtime flowers also lures you to stroll in the historic ambience of the Unesco World Heritage Site with a view of the cathedral and the Bamberg churches. “Urban horticulture is not a modern trend in Bamberg,” says Diana Büttner, Acting Director of the Bamberg World Heritage Center, “these areas were already cultivated in the Middle Ages to supply the city’s population – they have survived in a unique way to this day. The Garden Open Day offers a unique chance to explore this part of our world heritage that is normally less accessible!”

Garden enthusiasts also have the opportunity to learn interesting facts about the day-to-day work of the master gardeners, immerse themselves in “Romantic Hydrangea Worlds”, find out more about perennial hedges, get expert advice on tree care from the “Baumflitzer” or get professional advice on growing vegetables, gardening or gardening Tomb design benefit. There is also a wide range of activities for young guests: children can paint wooden pinwheels, make dream catchers and seed bombs, or pot their own salad. In bad weather, the many greenhouses offer a temporary refuge.

Delicacies prepared by the gardeners, such as “Blaue Zipfel gardeners’ style”, grilled char, “Bambercher Broodworschd” and vegetarian and vegan delicacies from “Bambercher Gmüs” spoil the palate. There is also Gärtner-Limo, rhubarb secco and specially created Gärtner cocktails. Beer lovers have a variety of home-brewed beers from the Hopfengarten to choose from.

Admission to all nurseries is free. This year, guests with restricted mobility can also use free e-shuttles to get to nurseries that are not in the city center. The participating companies, the program booklet and much more information can be found at www.gaertnerstadt-bamberg.de.

If you would like to find out more about the participating garden centers, the historical gardening culture and the gardening trail in advance, you can do so in the newly published 5th edition of the gardener city guide. The popular guide through Bamberg’s gardeners’ city is available from the Bamberg gardeners’ windows and in the World Heritage Visitor Center on the Untere Mühlen.

In addition to the gardener’s houses, the unique selling points of Bamberg’s gardener’s town are the inner-city cultivated areas, which have contributed to the designation of Bamberg’s old town as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since the Middle Ages, Bamberg’s gardeners have been cultivating their products in this part of the city, which they then and now export far beyond the region. With their particular perseverance, the gardeners have stuck to their inner-city production areas and thus preserved the medieval city structure to this day.
