Arresto de vendedor bicicletas.

The Fire Department has arrested a Brooklyn bicycle dealer, who already had several violations.

On Friday, inspectors showed up at the Electric Bicycle Shop, located at 12 39 Flatbush Avenue, in Brooklyn and arrested Tian Lian Liu for allegedly illegally selling electric bicycles.

Liu already has other violations from previous visits and authorities say he had not made the necessary changes.

This Monday, Commissioner Laura Kavanagh, said department, shared details of this first arrest related to the misuse of lithium-ion batteries.

“They sold electric bicycles without UL certification, stored loose batteries, stored loose propane cylinders, and committed other fire code violations,” Kavanagh stated.

In question it is located under several residential apartments.

So far this year, these devices have already caused more than 60 investigations, while in 2023, 268 and 18 deaths were recorded.

In September the city approved local law 39 that prohibits the sale, rental or distribution of electric bicycles and scooters without said certification.

Some residents of the sector give their opinion on this issue:

“It’s very dangerous, quite dangerous, I think it’s excellent, I didn’t know… I wasn’t aware that this was happening in the area.”

According to the FDNY, 10 fires involving lithium-ion batteries occurred last week. Five of them occurred over the weekend.

The department reminds homeowners to store and charge these batteries outside.
