Police in Pasadena, Texas, about 15 miles southeast of Houston, told multiple outlets Thursday that officers found 20-year-old Juan Carlos Mata dead near a makeshift monument erected days earlier after he Mata allegedly shot and killed his ex-girlfriend. Lesley Reyes, 19, in the parking lot of his apartment building.
Mata was reportedly on the run from police since Monday night when Pasadena police Sgt. Raúl Granados told the local KHOU11 that investigators believe that he killed his ex-girlfriend.
“The suspect was still on the scene and was walking away. Our officers were unable to pursue him because they first attended to the victim and immediately noticed that he was deceased. When they tried to go after his location, he was already gone, ”Granados told the outlet.
