Star chef Duc Ngo, 48, came to Germany as a refugee child in 1979 and attended the Carl Schurz elementary school on Hakenfelder Strasse. He was five years old then. Because of the expulsion of people of Chinese descent from Vietnam, his family once fled to Hong Kong and on to West Berlin.

Today he is the “King of Kantstrasse” and runs or managed several restaurants that have a name in the scene (“Shiro i Shiro”, “Kuchi”, “Madame Ngo”, “Cocolo”).

Recently there was a ten-course seafood menu for a proud 350 euros in “The Duc” – his new, temporary gastro club, which is located in an old building in Charlottenburg. According to his own statements, he currently runs 18 restaurants.

The little 1 × 1 learned in Hakenfelde. He returned to his old elementary school (600 kids, boss Constanze Rosengart) on Monday and cooked with other refugees from Syria and Lebanon. Why? “At that time, a German family was placed at our side. That was golden. So we were able to quickly gain a foothold here,” the chef is quoted as saying.

In the “Lemon” refugee project, women, most of whom are of Arabic origin, take part in workshops in the areas of gastronomy, baking and confectionery, as well as language seminars and job coaching. Duc Ngo twice invited the refugees and migrants from the Lemon project to his Funky Fish restaurant. This was followed by a return visit to Hakenfelde. More about the project: emp-ati.de/lemon
