O Telegram sent scathing messages to its users this Tuesday (9) in opposition to the Fake News Bill. According to the platform, the proposal “will end freedom of expression” and that Brazil is about to pass a law that will grant the government censorship powers without proper judicial supervision. Telegram classifies PL 2630 as one of the most dangerous legislation ever proposed in the country.

The clash between Telegram and the Brazilian justice intensified due to the allegation that the platform would not have complied with court requests to identify users involved in neo-Nazi groups. In the last week, however, the platform said that it did not fail to comply with any notification.

In an investigation conducted by the Federal Police, it was revealed that a teenager responsible for an attack on schools in Aracruz, Espírito Santo, last year, participated in neo-Nazi chats on Telegram.

The Fake News Bill aims to establish the Brazilian Law of Freedom, Responsibility and Transparency on the Internet. It sets out obligations for social networks, messaging apps and search engines to identify and remove accounts and content deemed criminal. Due to the recurrent attacks on schools throughout Brazil, the discussion around the approval of the project gained even more prominence.

Big tech resistance

While the government hopes to curb the spread of violent and harmful content on social media, big tech companies have shown resistance to internet regulation. O Googlefor example, included in its search page a link to a text entitled “The Fake News PL can increase the confusion about what is true or false”.
