The San Juan Court dismissed this Thursday the lawsuit filed in May by the Movimiento Victoria Ciudadana (MVC) and the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) against the prohibition of electoral alliances in Puerto Rico.

The prohibitions imposed in the Electoral Code “create a series of unconstitutional conditions that impose onerous burdens on the exercise of fundamental rights of political parties and their members,” they had alleged.

The petition to dismiss the lawsuit was from the New Progressive Party (PNP).

“After carefully examining the entire file and studying the applicable law, this Court concludes that it is not necessary to hold a hearing on its merits to resolve the controversy before our consideration, since there is no need to receive any evidence, since the dispute raised is one of strict law, reads part of the sentence handed down by Judge Raúl Candelario López without holding any hearing.

The MVC classified the decision as “carte blanche to the corrupt bipartisanship of the Legislative Assembly and protect its interests, even if that implies violating constitutional rights.”
