One dead, three injured, due to shots fired from scooters

NEW YORK.- One person was killed and three others were wounded in a shooting on a street corner in the Bronx by individuals riding scooters, police reported.

People on two scooters arrived at the intersection shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday, and the riders pulled out guns and fired about 10 shots, Assistant Police Chief Benjamin Gurley said.

Three people standing on the corner, whose ages ranged from 23 to 37, were shot in the legs. The fourth was hit in the legs and chest and died shortly after, Gurley said. She was later identified as Miguel Doleo, 29, of the Bronx.

“The perpetrators wore masks and hooded sweatshirts so as not to be identified and fled on their scooters heading north,” Gurley said.

One person was detained for questioning Tuesday night. But Gurley said police don’t know if that person was connected to the shooting.

He added that police are still investigating whether the shots were fired specifically at those people, and whether the incident has any connection with gangs.

The condition of the three injured people has not been released.

The Police Community Response Team has been working in the Bronx since April 1, searching for criminals on scooters, said Deputy Police Commissioner Kaz Daughtry.

Police have confiscated 9,500 scooters, bikes and ATVs since Jan. 1, including 2,500 in the Bronx, Daughtry said.

“This is a good example of why we have launched this operation,” he said.
