A fire in a company building that had been vacant for years triggered a major fire brigade operation in downtown Velbert on Sunday night. The fire brigade warned of fire smoke via the “Nina” app. Residents in the city center should keep windows and doors closed.

The alarm was triggered around 4 a.m., it said in the morning in the fire brigade control center on request. With a large contingent of forces, the fire brigade moved to Mittelstrasse 22. The firefighting operation was still going on in the morning.

Fire in Velbert: the building has been empty for years

According to initial information, the fire is said to have spread from the third floor of a former company building to the roof. A neighboring building was also affected. However, no further information was available this morning.

The “Nina” warning was triggered shortly after 6 a.m. because of “nuisance odor and smoke deposits”. Ventilation and air conditioning systems should also be switched off in the inner city area in Velbert until further notice, according to the fire brigade.

According to the fire department, there have been fires in the company complex in the past. Arson is therefore not excluded in the current case either. The police are investigating.
