Man sentenced to 11 years in prison for death of woman while driving drunk

Miguel Hernández López, 38, was sentenced this Monday, August 14, to serve 11 years in prison for the crash in which Marlena Cantú, 34, died and that Zenaida Sáenz, the victim’s mother-in-law, was injured, which occurred on 2 February 2020 in San Juan.

The man was facing two charges for this deadly crash in which firefighters had to break the car to get Marlena out, who later died at the hospital where she was taken to receive medical attention. The defendant was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when this tragedy occurred.

In the vehicle accompanying Merlena was her mother-in-law, Zenaida Sáenz, who was injured, according to court documents.

The sentence for these charges was:

  • Homicide by intoxication with a vehicle – sentence of 11 years in prison.
  • Accident involving serious bodily harm – 10 years

Both sentences will be served simultaneously.

The crash occurred on Minnesota street, between Veterans highway and Raúl Longoria highway when the truck that Hernández López was driving hit the car of Marlena and her mother-in-law with the outcome we already know.

Lopez had a prior 2008 conviction for driving while intoxicated.
