Meningitis cases: a mother dies and another struggles to live after surgery in Matamoros

Crystal Villegas fights for survival after being diagnosed with meningitis after undergoing cosmetic surgery in Matamoros, Tamaulipas. Her friend, Alma, also underwent surgery, but she has since died.

Juan Tapia, Crystal’s husband, says everything was fine at first but she started complaining of a headache. But as the days passed, her suffering did not disappear. Until one day “I tried to get her up. She felt that she was hot, with a high fever and I said let’s go to the emergency room. That’s when she did a little more tests and the result came out that she had meningitis.”

Crystal has told her husband that she really wants to see their three young children grow up. “We try to talk about positive things. She tells me that she regrets it. She would like to go back in time and never have that surgery,” adds Juan.

Two of Crystal’s friends have already died.

While Crystal is hovering between life and death, two of her friends have already died. Among them is Alma, who left behind a 5-year-old girl and today she sends a message to her mother. “Mommy, I love you with all my heart and I want you to come here with me, but you are in heaven,” said Alma’s daughter.

The woman underwent cosmetic surgery last March, but it took time to be treated. Initially the doctors told her that she only had neuralgia, until it was determined weeks later that she had meningitis.

“She was infected with meningitis and it took her life. The doctors told her there was no cure. What I want to come out of this is to accept yourself as you are. Do not undergo surgery,” said the woman’s husband.

For her part, Alma’s mother assures that these months were very difficult and that they never imagined that these would be the last days of her life. “My daughter was intubated three times and before she was intubated the second time, my daughter and I talked about her. She told me to take care of her daughter if anything went wrong.”

Now the families of the victims of this unfortunate event send a message to the population: Accept yourself, love yourself and love yourself as you are.
